Weight Loss Story of the Day: Cuorée (Cuore-e) lost 80 pounds, going from a size 22 to a size 12. This proud teacher faced weight gain at a young age and began her weight loss journey while in college. Over the years she’s been able to not only learn what works for her in terms of eating and exercising, but also inspire others. Here is what she shared with us about her weight loss journey…
I was a plump child who started gaining excess weight in Kindergarten. By 3rd grade, I’d ballooned to 175 lbs. Puberty sped up my growth and metabolism. By elementary school graduation, I was about 5’6″ tall.
By the end of high school, I was about 5’9″ tall, but I didn’t know my weight for sure. Despite the positive comments from others about my pretty face and smile, I realized that my snug 22 pant-size were NOT okay.
Going away to college motivated me to take advantage of the gyms on campus. Often I would walk to classes or ride my bike. I cut out soda and extra sweet juices from my diet and drank mostly water all day long. Of course, I ate starches, sugary cereals, baked sweets, salads, proteins, fast food, balanced meals and whatever I liked, but I was thrilled that the weight began to drop off.
After college graduation, I moved back home where the weight picked up again. A couple years later when I finally got the courage to weigh myself one day, the scale read 267 pounds. This time, I began walking –to the grocery store, around the block and to the neighborhood parks. I walked anywhere, at my convenience, but I didn’t make too many changes with regard to my eating habits.
Disappointingly, when I started teaching English 14 years ago, my weight had only reduced to the 240’s. Five years later, at age 26, a doctor diagnosed me with high blood pressure. This motivated me to learn about portion control and to make healthier food choices. I also earned a Master’s degree in Public Health, gained a personal trainer certificate and began to reach out to other black women who struggled with their weight, no matter how much or little they needed to lose.
In my early 30’s, I was down to 215 lbs. With the Nintendo Wii, I began working out to fitness DVD’s 4-5 days/week at home. At home, I could monitor everything about my health behaviors and eating choices by experimenting with tasty recipes to simply measuring the quantities of foods that I liked to eat. I noticed fat turning to muscle. I also learned to go to sleep earlier and eat meals earlier. Oranges, watermelon pineapples and grapefruit are absolutely my favorite sweets! I’ve trained my palate to crave them daily.
At 33, I discovered my true love for Zumba while dancing up a sweat to uplifting music! I also used calorie-counting apps to manage my eating and sleep habits. When I got a little off track, I simply forgave myself. Later, on Amazon.com, I wrote and published my first e-book, 9-1-1 Lifestyle Change.
Today at 35, I use 2-lb. weights with my Zumba routines for added resistance. I’m a Health Science/Pharmacology teacher now as well. I feel that I’m a winner, although it took 11 years to realize what necessary changes worked for me. Although I picked up some weight after my white wedding 7 months ago and now I weigh close to 187 pounds, my vital signs are great, I wear a size 12 and I’m in the best shape of my life. Thank God!
