Mia is now down 330 pounds. Check out her latest update.
Updated 2014: Mia’s (Marqkria) story is one of our fav weight loss success stories! Check out her story in the 2014 Half Their Size edition of People Magazine on page 90 and find out how she lost 323 pounds. When she was 19, she weighed 407 lbs. When she got pregnant she gained about 65 pounds, bringing her weight to 472 lbs. She was also on Good Morning America and Inside Edition!
Original post 8/9/2013: Today’s featured weight loss before & after story: Mia lost 260 pounds over the course of 4 years after dealing with her weight since childhood. Here is what she shared with us about losing the weight:
My motivation came from me wanting to take control of my life. I was never a small child growing up. When I was 5 years old, I weighed 76 pounds and I suffering from a narrowing blood vessel in my heart and had surgery to correct it. From then on my mother did not want me to be to active she was afraid I would have a heart attack. So, I basically stayed in the house a lot and ate myself heavy. By the time I was 13 years old, I weighed 172 pounds. I was picked on all the way through my school days for being heavy. By the age 19, I weighed 346 pounds. My doctor once told me I was borderline diabetic and that I was going need a respirator at night. He was afraid that I would die in my sleep. He also said that I would not live very long if I continued on the journey I was on. I was talking blood pressure and cholesterol medications. Not enjoying my life at all, that was the changing point for me.
I did not get serious until my early twenties. By that time I was 407 pounds. I started off by taking a nutrition class to learn how to eat. My biggest problem was that I did not know how to eat. The class taught me about portion control. Afterwards, I began to walk for exercise. I would start off at just 15 minutes a day. Because of the pressure of the weight on my knees, I could not walk for long. After a week of changing my eating habits and exercising I started to see my weight fall off. My mom has been my biggest inspiration to keep myself healthy. Once she found out how dangerous my weight was, she helped me the whole way get to a healthier me.
To make a long story short, my starting weight was 407 pounds. Now, I weigh now 147 pounds (I bounce between 146 and 148). I am now a 5k runner. I look for runs between Columbus, GA and Alabama to be a part of to run for a cause. I have completely changed my life and I am not on a diet. This has been a complete lifestyle change for me. I eat based on my daily dietary needs and follow the food pyramid to a “t”. LOL. My complete transformation took about 4 years. It was very slow, well-proportioned weight lost. It came off very slowly but I have enjoyed the process. The whole time I’ve been watching myself transform little by little. Recently, I have started doing P90X and I am picking up some muscle tone. I can’t wait to see my final results.

Mia, words can NOT express how very proud of you I am. Your story is beyond remarkable and I just want to say THANK YOU for being such a motivator for us who are simply and idly going through our Facebook pages, wanting a change, secretly dying inside because the task seems so overwhelming. But I know ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD and I just want to get up and START. Not focus so much on the end but learn to enjoy the journey like you said. I have to get up from this private HELL of obesity because I know there is beauty, vitality and happiness inside of me, I just have to go within and get that “GIRL”. Thank you so much…..can’t stop crying for your success. Now it’s time for me to put in the work and get mine. (Smile) GOD BLESS YOU MIA!!!!! I WILL LET YOU KNOW how things are going.

Just start your journey, and pray for strength. I was 230 and now I am 171. I still have a long way to go, but keep giving yourself credit for every step. Mia’s story is amazing. Do not give up.

I am worried about my daughter. She is17 years old and 346 pounds. I support her with motivation by playing the Wii games with her. She wants to lose weight but U don’t think I am the motivator for her. Her name is Jaylyn . Her email is jerhue@gmail.com. I am open to any comments or suggestions. Thank you!
Sade says
Beth, I think you are a great motivator for your daughter by playing the wii games with her. However, there is more that needs to be done to help her lose the weight she needs to lose. I will suggest you clean out the pantry. Get rid of the junk food and fill it with healthy foods. Turn to
Clean eating. Let her know your reason for cooking healthy meals is to take care of yourself and your family, and to be healthy.
I had to do the same for my son who is 11. He had his physical, a few days later his doctor stating that his cholesterol was slightly elevated. I had to change his eating habit and not just mine. He doesn’t like the idea cos he’s still a kid, but I tell him, “we’re doing it to take better care of our health and not end up in the hospital. He eats the foods I cook despite not liking seafood, but he is starting to understand the reason we eat clean cos I always tell him why we have to eat healthy. I wish you well and I know as mother and daughter, you’ll go out successful.

Mia, thank you for being an inspiration. You are helping me get my motivation back. I am struggling with my weight loss. I find it hard to stay motivated when I hit a plateau. My biggest I was 412. I got down to 335 but have gone back up to 360. Your story tells me it can be done and I’m ready to get back on track and get it done. Thank you.
mia says
CONGRATULATIONS on your weight lost journey. i know how it is to hit plateaus but keep going when i would hit a plateau was a sign that my body was getting use to change so i would change my eating and my exercise up a little more by adding another 10 mins of cardio and increasing my water intake one of the biggest things when losing weight is that as your body decreases in size and your activity level increases your body began’s to adjust to the change and that causes plateaus some times figuring out the amount of calorie intake you need for your activity level will help your get over plateaus very easy.

CONGRATS Mia! Once you see progress like this you realize that it’s not just about the Fat, it’s about life and the right to live your life happily. You’ve taken a very personal goal and turned it into a complete epiphany about life. This is the piece that inspires people the most. You look amazing!
I’m a Black male and I’ve recently been talking to my sistas about starting a Black female movement to lose weight. I feel so guilty every time I go out some where and I wanna holla at my sisters but in my experience, more often than not they are very overweight. If I saw you when I went out I’d holler in a heartbeat.
I recently started my own workout/exercise and already lost 30lbs. Keep up the great work Mia!

P.S. To accomplish weight loss and be an American living in the U.S. is quadrupley-hard, so give yourself another pat on the back.

Mia,
Congratulation on your weight loss, I was at 407 pounds November 2012, and today September 2013 I am at 348. I dropped to 333 pounds and now I am fighting to regain my commitment and my determination to become a healthy person. So, I want to say thank you so much for your testimony. It was a divine appointment for me to read it today because I once again made a vow to God to get back on track. You have motivated me at the right time for I was battling in my mind to choose to eat healthy for lunch or choose something that tastes good and bad for me. So, again I just want to thank you and celebrate your weight loss. “You Go Girl!”
Good Job Mia!

I agree with Mr. Hernandez. I’m still fighting the same demon and losing. Ihave tried many gym, trainers, diets, weight loss drugs. I sad to admit i’ve contemplated suicide because I see everyone else winning this battle and i’m losing.I let myself go of many reasons. I really don’t have much suppport but after seeing this I should give God a try. I have no other option, and I don’t want to go the sucide route either. Thank you for posting your story. I hope God will answer my prayer to get out this fat hell I put myself in. God bless you.

First off let me start by saying what an amazing accomplishment! Having lost 130 lbs myself, I know it was not an easy task and I applaud you for deciding to take control! As a result of my weight loss, I now have to deal with excess skin, particularly on my arms and abdominal area. I was wondering how you dealt with that issue, although judging by the picture on the far right, you don’t seem to have that problem!
Marqkria Mcmiller says
Remember our skin is very sensitive and when losing weight if we lost it at a face drastic pace we will have excess skin but I way you can reduce the amount you will have is to invest and really good shapewear because our skin is elastic keeping compression on it as we lose weight can help with the elasticity of our skin. also daily massages are good as well I am picking up a lot of muscle so it is helping with the excess skin.
Serena says
Mia!!!! Girl you have proven it can be done!!! Congrats you, look great!! I’m on my journey and it hasn’t been easy at all!! Sweets are my weakness but I’ll still have them in small portions so I won’t over do it but I have lost about 63lbs so far but I would like 50 more gone I work out in the water do you have any other fitness suggestions?
Marqkria Mcmiller says
Thank you and congratulations on your journey I would like to suggest to eliminate sweets from your diet and replace them with a healthier option like natural sweets such as fruits and maybe carrot and honey is very rewarding
Marqkria Mcmiller says

Great Job. Did u have any surgery help or u did this all on your own. I ask because I see so many of these success stories but they never tell the whole truth..People want the truth so when they start an see nothing happening, they find out the person left out the fact they had this or that done and didnt tell the whole story.
