Transformation of the Day: Nakia went from a size 22 to a size 14. She is on team non-scale victory and uses photos to track her progress. This mom on a mission changed up her eating habits and has become an avid runner. Check out what she shared about her journey.
What was your motivation? What inspired you?
My son had just graduated from high school and was leaving on a mission with our church for the next two years. He has watched me struggle with getting my weight/health under control over the years. During the time that he is gone, I really wanted prove to myself and to him that I could take the necessary steps to be healthy.
How did you change your eating habits?
To start this journey, I did not want to bite off more than I could handle, so I started by removing sugar and processed carbs from my diet first. Then, I cut out dairy and started cooking only whole foods instead of processed foods. If it came in a box, it was not on my menu. I was even able to get my husband and youngest son to join me.
What did your workout routines look like?
I have always wanted to RUN a 5K. Not to walk-run, but to fully run one. So, I have been training using a C25K app (Couch to 5K). I try to run 3-4 times a week. It has been awesome. I am able to endure longer running stretches. Working toward running a marathon is something that I really want to do that I have given up on in the past.
Since I have been running, I have notice some pretty awesome changes and reaped some even more awesome benefits. I had some blood work done and my physician sent me a wonderful note. He said, ” Your weight is down since last time. Your cholesterol is EXCELLENT and your blood pressure has decreased to 115/70. Keep doing whatever it is you’re doing.” I am NOT a fast runner, even by a turtle’s imagination, but I am doing what I can. I may never break a 13 minute mile (the fastest I’ve ever been), but I am up and out there.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
In the beginning, I did not like to weight myself and I still don’t. I go by how I feel in my clothing and the fit of my clothes. I also track the changes in my monthly photos so that I can see my progress. Whether that progress is good or bad, I still take the photo. My starting size was 22 and I am currently in a size 14. My height is 5’3”.
How long did your transformation take?
So, far it’s taken 4 months to get to where I am now.
What advice do you have for others who want to lose weight?
Take it a little bit at a time. Don’t overwhelm yourself with focusing too much on an end result. Instead create shorter goals and reward yourself with non-food activities, like a pedicure or facial. I like to reward myself with signing up for a new race.

Keep up the good work. I am going to try the C2K app, I am a believer in not getting overwhelm start off slow.
