Transformation of the Day: Brittini lost 75 pounds. She was tired of uncomfortable car rides, emotional eating binges and not recognizing the woman who stared back at her in the mirror. With the support of friends and family, she used Keto, intermittent fasting and exercise to change her life. Check out her journey.
When did you start your journey?
I started in September 2016. It took a year and a half to lose the weight because I wasn’t always the strictest with my diet. I began my journey after fighting for many years to lose weight, failing, falling victim to emotional binges and having lazy days which turned into months. I reached a point where it was difficult for me to complete basic tasks without being exhausted. I was so uncomfortable in my own skin.
I got up one day and decided that I was going to make the necessary changes that I knew I needed to make. It’s been a long, fluctuating road since then, but I’m not giving up. I’m making healthier choices each day and putting in the work to become the best version of myself.
What was your motivation?
My motivation stemmed from people taking pics of me and me seeing the pics afterward. I didn’t recognize myself in the photos. Also, I would travel in taxis and see the look of disgust on people’s faces thinking I was gonna squeeze them in and make them uncomfortable. I would have to pay for cars to drop me at home and pay for extra seats.
One day, I was walking home, and I just couldn’t make it. I live on an incline, and it’s a challenge to make that walk. Although I’ve taken it many times, I was breathing heavily and had to make several stops… even though it’s a short walk.
What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to quit?
What inspired me to keep going was never wanting to be in a place where I didn’t recognize the person who stared back in the mirror and where I wondered how I got there. My friends and family were really supportive. Even total strangers, who I didn’t know were looking at me, offered me kind words and cheered me on.
How did you change your eating habits?
I started the Ketogenic diet, and I factored in periods of intermittent fasting. Being honest with myself, I realized that carbs and over-consumption of them were my problems. I told myself to stop gradually. Eventually, the high carb foods I longed for in the past were no longer a necessity.
What did your workout routine consist of?
I worked out at least 4-5 days a week doing HIIT workouts with a team of coaches. Then, I joined a local gym in Trinidad and Tobago, where I’m from. I also did hikes on the island to get in some extra cardio outside of my gym sessions. I got a new trainer this year, and I want him to help me break through my weight loss plateau.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 300 pounds and my current weight 225 lbs. I’m 5’2″.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
Consistency is key. At some points on this journey, I started slacking off. I was falling into old eating habits. I was working out less and with less effort. The weight came piling back on, and I had to work extra hard to get it off.
What advice would you like to share with people who want to release the weight?
Take it one step at a time, one day at a time. Trust me, it’s gonna to be difficult. People don’t often share the pain of cravings or the pain of dealing with emotional trauma and not being able to bury yourself in a tub of ice cream for fear that it will lead to continuous binging. It’s hard.
For those who don’t fall off the health wagon, I applaud them. If you do fall off, just dust yourself off and keep going. You’re not in a race with anyone. The most important thing is that you get to where you need to be. The journey is better than the destination, truly.
