Transformation of the Day: Shanalisa lost 27 pounds. While battling PCOS and acid reflux, she found out that she was pre-diabetic. She took action by committing to Keto and working out. As a single mom, she wants to live a healthy life for her daughter, who helps her mom stay on track. Check out her story.
What was your motivation? What inspires you to keep going, even when you felt like giving up?
My motivation was just being fed up. I was tired of not being healthy and not liking what I saw when I looked in the mirror. Also, I found out I was pre-diabetic while also battling PCOS and terrible acid reflux.
My daughter inspires me to keep going. At nine years old, she’s like my little alarm clock. She reminds me to workout and points out unhealthy food when I wanted to indulge. I want to be healthy so that I can have a long life with her and be there for because I am her only parent.
How did you change your eating habits?
I started to change my habits one day at a time. First, I started drinking more water. Then, I began eating more vegetables. If I consumed anything with sugar, I would be in small portions. Eventually, I did my research, and I started Keto. My Keto journey has been rocky, but I think it works best for me. I stopped drinking juice, which turned out to be pretty easy. I eat a high fat, low carb diet with the minimum amount of protein.
What did your workout routine consist of?
I used YouTube videos to work out, along with 10 min of jump rope and lifting “make-believe” weights (truck tire). I also walk 5 miles on the weekends. At the beginning of my journey, I committed to working out every day for a full month just to prove to myself that it can be done, and to see how my body works.
Starting weight/Current weight
My starting weight was 244/246 pounds. My current weight is 219 pounds. I know I didn’t lose tons of weight, but I am so proud of myself. Ever since I started my journey, I am no longer pre-diabetic, and I don’t have acid reflux. I remember trying everything to treat my stomach issues in the past. I didn’t realize that all I needed to do was to change my lifestyle. I am very proud of myself because I always had issues with my weight, but I never stayed consistent when I decided to work out and eat healthy food. Now that I am “27lbs lighter!” I see that it is possible to reach my goal. Consistency is the key.
Age/Height
I am 27 years old and 5 feet 9 inches tall.
When did you start your journey? How long did your transformation take?
I would say I’ve been on this journey ever since I can remember. I’ve always had an issue with my weight, even when there really was no issue. I was never committed or consistent until this year, September 2019, so it’s been approximately three months. My journey continues because my goal weight is 170 pounds.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
The biggest lesson I learned is to be patient and consistent. It’s been three months! I look at what my body did and imagine what will happen if I continue.
What advice would you like to share?
My advice: Take it one day at a time. It took years to pack on the weight, so it will surely take some time to get it off. Focus on your journey as a lifestyle change. Find methods and ways to be healthier that fit who you are as an individual. If you don’t push yourself to do what you need to do to change your life, all the plans and preparation you made to lose the weight will be in vain. Also, eat healthy and work out, even if you don’t feel like it.
