Transformation of the Day: Dorothy lost 115 pounds. Faith and changing her mindset were key to her success. She didn’t cut out her favorite foods. Instead, she used moderation and lots of exercise to transform her body. Now, this awesome mom wants to become a personal trainer and help others. Check out what she shared with us.
My name is Dorothy and I have been on my weight loss journey since January 2015. I lost 115 pounds in 18 months! My initial reasons for losing weight were to be here to see my children grow up. Now, I’ve changed my whole view on life and I want to become a personal trainer. I have about 30 more pounds to go until I reach my goal weight, but in the mean time, why not help others? I have a fitness page where I document my workouts: Facebook: “Dot Gets Fit“. I’m also on Instagram: @dotgetsfit
What inspired you to keep going during those times when you wanted to give up?
God inspired me! My faith is what kept me afloat most days. The days where I could barely get out of bed due to the workout the previous day, I still pressed toward the mark for the prize! I was determined and I am still determined. I refuse to quit! Everyone who has come in contact with me knows I am determined and I won’t let anything or anyone get in my way of reaching my weight loss goals.
How did you change your eating habits?
Now, this is where I throw a monkey wrench in the weight loss/healthy eating game. I pretty much ate what I wanted to eat in the beginning and still do to this day. Do you know why? The key is moderation. Everyone thinks I’m starving myself, but that’s hilarious because I still can throw down at the dinner table. The reason being is because I work out every day and I work out for at least 3 hours a day, sometimes 5 hours if I don’t have to work that day. I am in this to win, I am in this to show the world you do NOT have to eat like a rabbit to be healthy. You do not have to starve yourself to be skinny. Look at me! I did it and so can you!
What did your workout routines look like?
I did Zumba 2-3 times a week. I walked 5-10 miles a day. I went to the gym 2-3 hours a day (during the winter months). I worked out 7 days a week, 2-3 times a day. I worked out morning, noon, and night.
Starting weight/Current weight
My starting weight was 322 pounds. I’ve lost 115 pounds. My height is 5’4″.
What advice do you have for others who want to lose weight?
You have to change the way you view food. You should eat to live, not live to eat. Many people fail at losing weight because their mind isn’t in the right place. I had a moment where I stopped and thought about my children, and how I wouldn’t be alive to see them grow up if I didn’t change my eating habits. I had so many people pushing me, that I literally could feel the push, and that’s when it happened. Something clicked in my mind. I told myself Dorothy you’re going to lose the weight and you’re going to keep it off. Though some people don’t believe in this, I am a FIRM believer in MIND OVER MATTER. I literally had to chant this to myself on several occasions: “You can do it, see yourself at the finish line.” I had to tell food, “Food you don’t have power over me, I control you, you do not control me.”
These things worked for me, you have to find what works for you. Some of you might not be able to eat what you want and get away with it. So, please do not try it if you have any kind of medical conditions. I advise you to ask your doctor for advice. I can eat what I want in moderation because I do not have any health issues, and I never have. Ain’t God good? I weighed 322 pounds with no diabetes, no heart disease, no high blood pressure… not one thing! My God did it. Oh yes, He did it, and He did it SUDDENLY!
Also, don’t let anyone dictate to you when to stop losing weight! When you start to lose weight, everyone will be happy for you, cheer you on and say, “That’s good girl, keep up the good work.” But just as soon as you start to look better than them, they are going to try to throw a monkey wrench in your plans. I advise you to ignore the haters and keep on keeping on until you reach your weight loss goal. Don’t let anyone stop you! You can do this!
What makes you want to help others get fit? What do you love about being able to do that?
I want to help others because I know how it feels to be the biggest person in the room or the biggest person on the track. I know what that feels like, and I want to help others feel good about themselves. I want them to know I used to be big too, so I won’t judge you. I won’t laugh at you. I want to help you!
