Hi! My name is DeAnna and I’m a black woman who has lost weight. I once weighed 230 pounds. Now, I aim to inspire others. I just competed in my first bodybuilding competition where I took 3rd in my open figure division and I’m nationally qualified. I have remained consistent with my journey since 2010 and to date I’ve lost at total of 100 pounds. Currently, I weigh 135 pounds at 5’5″. I always tell people, it’s not an overnight process but it can happen if you trust the process.
What was your motivation? What inspired you?
My biggest motivation came after going to the doctor around age 21 for a consultation. The doctor told me I was morbidly obese based on my height and weight.
How did you change your eating habits?
Well, growing up I lived on fast food and quick fix meals. So, when I began my weight loss journey in early 2010 I researched various foods and learned what exactly I was putting in my body. This forced me to learn to cook at home more.
What did your workout routines look like?
In the beginning, I simply walked everyday for 30 minutes. I slowly incorporated light strength training until I learned more about proper form and strategy for weight lifting. Once I got the point of being toned to my satisfaction, I decided to take things to the next level by entering my first bodybuilding show. I trained myself through the whole thing. I did seek the help of a posing coach for my stage presentation,
How long did your transformation take?
I began in 2010 and saw the biggest change by 2012. I’ve maintained my transformation since then.
What advice do you have for others who want to lose weight?
My advice to others is don’t seek quick fixes. Weight loss is about making a total lifestyle change. Don’t rely on the scale it can be the biggest discourager. Take baby steps and be smart. Know that all in all it can be done!
