Tasha has lost 73 pounds!
} ?>Tasha has transformed her body going from 236 to 163. That’s a loss of 73 pounds!!

She Says,
“Hi my name is Tasha and I started my journey mid January. Journey as in life style not diet! I worked hard to lose weight starting at 236 and I’m down to about 163 close to goal which is 160. I eat clean foods and I cook my own meals. I eat veggies, fruits daily and drink plenty of water everyday. I workout five days a week doing weight training three days a week, Jillian Michaels twice a week and some tabata and HIIT all at home no gym! I count calories daily on fitness pal app. I measure and weigh my foods. My main focus is more toning now and building mean muscle. No one has pushed my but me. Anyone can do it if I did. I don’t believe in excuses. I’ve become addicted to working out and I love it and I also love to cook clean meals so my next goal is to become a nutritionist/ trainer.
It’s not just about exercise its about what you’re eating as well. I always say its 80% clean eating and 20% exercise and this is true. It all starts with what’s in your kitchen and what you’re putting in your plate. I’m very strict with what I do. I have a foods scale and weigh my foods and I use measuring cups and spoons. I measure everything. That’s the only way to get a accurate count. I track all that I eat. To some it sounds like too much but it’s not and its worth it to me.”

Katrina lost 60 pounds!
} ?>Today’s featured success story comes from a recent grad, Katrina, who has lost 60 pounds with weight loss surgery.
She says:
“As I reflected on the day I walked across the stage at Mississippi State University in 2010 to receive my Ph.D., I remember thinking about how making the decision to pursue higher education AND see it through to the end was one of the absolute most difficult challenges of my life. For I had endured countless hours of making the over 3 hour trek to campus on the weekends, 24 hour study sessions with no sleep, hundreds of assignments, presentations and study groups, a multitude…of examinations, and more…all while working a full-time job.
Believe it or not, however, graduating with a doctorate in 2010 has nothing on my most recent graduation!
Exactly one year ago I made another important, yet challenging, decision. That decision was to finally take the very necessary steps toward fulfilling a vow I’d long ago made to myself, yet broken many times. The vow: To relentlessly pursue God’s purpose for my life with vigor, strive to be the best me ever and to never take my life/health for granted. Perhaps the vow wasn’t so easy to keep because along with it came confronting past fears and failures, being vulnerable and open to change, transforming my thinking, making sacrifices and being quite uncomfortable, yielding to the process and laying aside excess weight which presented itself in MANY forms. Nonetheless, on October 4, 2011, my journey began.
While there’s still more weight to lose and more goals to be realized, with one year, 60 pounds of physical weight and many, many more pounds of additional baggage behind me, I am both grateful for the journey and even more motivated to continue.
So with Pomp and Circumstance playing brazenly in my head, I now proudly prepare for next October’s graduation as I pursue my next level of purpose! Who knows, maybe I’ll graduate early!
While spending four years pursuing my degree and simultaneously working an EXTREMELY stressful job, I found that majorly neglecting myself became such a common practice that I would do it without thinking about it. Unfortunately, the more I neglected myself and gave in to the stress of being everything to everyone else the more my health spiraled out of control…launching my weight into the stratosphere as well. In May of 2011, I finally decided to walk away from a job where the money was good but along with a nice salary came an investment of over 70 long hours per week, being on-call every weekend and dodging drama, lies and deception was the only exercise I could manage. Two days after resigning from the job, I came to the harsh reality that not only had all the stress and neglect finally taken their toll on my outer appearance but my internal organs were suffering as well. I ended up in the emergency room with the unexpected news that I need to have my gall bladder removed. Surgery was scheduled and the next day what was supposed to last 45 minutes. The surgery actually became a 2 hour ordeal.
There I was, lying unsuspectingly in the recovery room when a gentle pat on my left shoulder awakened me as the friendly smile of a brightly dressed nurse came into focus through my blurred vision. She seemed to be so excited to announce my awakening to the rest of the nursing staff. I was confused and in pain, yet grateful to know that I had made it back from ‘the other side’. You see, I know that any surgery has its risks and I certainly never took them lightly.
Suddenly, the curtain to my right was opened and in walked the surgeon, with a relieved look on his face. I will never forget that look because it caused my heart to drop and my palms to get sweaty. The doctor looked me deep into the eyes and said, “Welcome back! We almost lost you.”
WHAT???
He then said that there was a complication with the surgery and it was discovered that my gall bladder had somehow fused into my liver. Ultimately liver failure was a concern, and death was even more of a fear. Sparing the gory details, two hours and seventeen minutes later I was under the watchful eye of medical staff that had previously feared the worse. But GOD had a much, much different plan!!
After having been given another chance to live, I made the decision to take a radical medical approach to losing the weight, salvaging my health and ultimately reclaiming my life. Upon the unyielding recommendation of my primary care physician, I decided to undergo Gastric Lap-Band surgery on October 4, 2011. After the surgery, I thought the weight would automatically fall off (contrary to what the doctor had warned). To my surprise, being a Bariatric patient requires commitment, hard work, discipline and a total lifestyle transformation. The one year journey has not been without its share of struggles, but I can honestly say that I am yet eternally grateful for the unmerited grace and mercy gifted to me. My work out commitment includes a regiment of 45-60 minute cardio sessions 6 days per week and alternating upper/lower body strength training sessions 3-4 days per week. I follow a low carb/high protein diet which includes 60-80g of protein, 64oz of water, plenty of healthy whole wheat and fresh fruit and vegetable choices. My life is now lived daily with gratitude, purpose and a sense of humility. Unhealthy living is not an option, nor is wallowing in self-pity, doubt and disbelief. My God is able to do over and above what I can ever ask or think of…He is amazing, and I am LIVING proof.”
Amber has lost 45 pounds!
} ?>We are sending out BWLW Love to our Featured Success Story of the Day, Amber, who has lost 45 pounds, going from 207 to 162. She’s a mother of 3 as well!!
Note: One of photos is flipped so that the comparison could be the same. She still has the tattoo. This caused some controversy on our FB page.

She says, “I have 3 children ages 8,3, and 17 months. After having my baby u went through a lot dealing with depression and a divorce and gained tons of weight and got up to 207. I wasn’t able to play with kids and do a lot of things because of my weight and the pressure on my bad knees and decided to lose weight after Having to wear my boyfriends clothes. I started in April and started my membership back at the gym and started taking Zumba then got excited and addicted to it and could see it was a great fun workout but wasn’t losing weight then finally the hard part I decided to start Eating healthy and the weight started falling off. I got certified to teach Zumba In may and have been trying to keep up since. Started at 207 and currently 154 but the pics are 207/162 in about 4 and a half months and still trying to maintain. I just live to see African American women getting motivated to lose weight and be healthy.”
Update: I know that a number of your have had questions since the initial posting yesterday so I asked Amber to fill us in on how she lost the belly fat and her Zumba classes.
“I live in DECATUR Illinois and currently teach Zumba at the YMCA there but in time starting workout classes in my new garage. It’s huge and I wanna start classes and use the money to put up studio mirrors in it.
Basically my diet was really bad at first I ate all day long and full course meals twice a day with tons of carbs and drank at least 3 sodas daily. When I decided to lose weight I cute the soda and juices completely and started drinking lots of water and hot green tea and organic tea. I cut the carbs down at least 60% and got rid of fried food all the way also and snacking on candy and chips ended also.
The main things I ate were oatmeal or Special K cereal with skim milk in the morning.
For lunch: green bean, carrots and spinach and grilled chicken breast on the foreman and the same for dinner. Also sometimes I would replace a meal with a protein shake the ones I tried were muscle milk, Special K shakes, slim fast or the myoplex ones. But basically did that for 4 months and that weight came off along with my workout plan”

DivaSlimsDown: My Favorite Before and After Video on YouTube
} ?>Update 2015: Ruth has now lost 181 pounds!!!
Today’s Featured Weight Loss Success Story is my absolute favorite before and after video on YouTube. It’s Ruth aka DivaSlimsDown who has lost over 150 pounds! She has worked her way down from 341 pounds with hard work, working out and eating right.
Check out her whole weight loss journey on her awesome YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/DivaSlimsDown. You can also find her on Facebook. I love that she is sharing her journey with the world. On her YouTube channel she chronicles her workouts, what she eats and gives vivid details of her journey from 341 pounds. It is amazing the amount of information that Ruth is blessing us with. I found a recent interview she did with 2bfitfabfierce and here’s part of how she lost the pounds:
I drink tons of water. I do not drink any sodas anymore. I eat similar things as before but less of it. I also find healthier ways to make the foods I like. I don’t eat frozen dinners like lean cuisine etc. They have too much sodium. I make sure I’m eating throughout the entire day 5-6 small meals. For example for breakfast I will have eggs and turkey bacon. Next I will have a snack, which can be any fruit of my choice. Then for lunch I will have a chicken salad. I will have another snack of fruit and a 100-calorie pack snack. For dinner I will have chicken breast with vegetables. Then have another snack like almonds or fruit. As far as for exercise in the beginning I could only do 15 minutes of walking 2-3 days a week. As I got more endurance my workouts grew longer. Now I workout 2 times a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. 6 days a week for 2-3 hours a day. In the morning I do a shorter workout, usually a workout DVD that’s less then 30 minutes. In the afternoons I go to Curves and do my strength training and then do an hour zumba class.
Here is one of her most recent videos.
Great job, Ruth!
