Hi Ladies, Here is your Weight Loss on a Budget Tip for Day 5 of our Oct Challenge: Pick Cheaper Cuts of Meat!

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Does cheaper mean that I’m choosing lesser quality meats?”. No. I doesn’t have to mean that. You just have to know what you are looking for in terms of the type of meat and the fat content. You have to buy steak or chicken breast just to get good quality meat. It can be confusing trying to figure out what meats to buy so I’ve got some info for you.
- Know the grade of your beef: The grade of the meat notes the amount of fat aka. marbling in the meat. Maturity of the meat (psychological age of the animal) is also a factor in grade. These 2 factors impact flavor and tenderness. What you want to look for is cuts of meat that are reasonably priced and low on fat. Meats that show a lot of fat and look marbled will be what you want to stay away from. The three most common grades of meat are prime, choice and select. You want to choose select when it comes to beef.
- Go SkinLess: Removing the skin from turkey and chicken can dramatically reduce calories. Chicken wings and thighs are a great example.
- Ground Breast Meat: Instead of whole breasts, consider ground chicken or turkey that is made from breast meat to be sure of the quality. Ground meat can be very versatile, giving you the option to cook it with pasta, make meatloaf, patties, etc.
- Consider Lean Pork: If you do eat pork, look for lean cuts like pork tenderloin or roasts. Canadian bacon is a great alternative to traditional sausage and bacon.
- Low Sodium Deli Meat – I usually don’t recommend processed food, but from a budget standpoint low-sodium deli meat is an option. Look for brands that promote that they are less processed or more natural. Do your research to find the most natural products in this category and consider buying from the deli counter instead of buying pre-packaged options. Delis are known to discount the “ends” of the meat sections for less than regular price to get rid of it, so ask about that.
List of meats to consider:
- Eye round roast
- Ground beef (95/5%)
- Top round steak
- Top round roast
- Skinless chicken thighs
- Skinless chicken wings
- Ground turkey
- Ground chicken
- Pork tenderloin
- Canadian Bacon
- Low-sodium deli sliced turkey
- Low-sodium deli sliced chicken

Here is today’s tip for our
With gastric sleeve weight loss surgery, the stomach is reshaped to create a narrow, tube-like “sleeve,” rather than its original gourd-like shape. This reshaping helps to reduce the size of the stomach and allows you to feel fuller faster. It also changes the amount of food that it is possible for you to eat at any given time because there is little expansion room available to accommodate overeating.
Many experts and nutritionists encourage people to keep a food journal when they are trying to lose weight. There are so many tools out there like FitBit,
If you follow health news then you know that research has shown a link between being overweight and an increased risk breast cancer. The link is only just beginning to be understood by scientists and it is revealing some facts that should have a very positive influence on reducing the instances of breast cancer worldwide and obesity rates. The only way to reduce the risk of breast cancer related to obesity is to lose the weight and keep it off. Losing the weight doesn’t absolutely proof your body against breast cancer, as there can be many other factors that can raise your risk as well. However, it is a factor that you can control (for most people, that is).
People have bad knees for a variety of reasons. It can be from overuse, under use, past injuries, being overweight, having arthritis or many other disorders that affect the joint. The new thinking on joints is that staying in motion is more beneficial to keeping your mobility than avoiding movement. For many people, the benefits of exercising are also recognized as doing much more to help your mood and physical health as well. The golden rule to remember is that if you do any of them and your knees hurt, stop.
Weight loss surgery is not for everyone. We celebrate the stories of black women who have used weight loss surgery as a tool on this site because we believe that it is a viable option for many people and that they are under a doctors care. We also assume that they were aware of all of the risks and potential complications involved with weight reduction surgery. For many, the risks out weight the benefits and they are blessed to have successful surgeries. For others, that is not the case. It is a very personal choice.
Now…As with ANY diet plan or meal plan YOU have to modify it to make it work for you. There is no One-Size-Fits All Plan!
