Update Nov 2017: Jasmine lost 13 more pounds for a total of 78 pounds gone. “After losing my initial 78 pounds, I became certified as a personal trainer. I recently taught my fitness bootcamp called Thee Confident Curvy Experience!”

Oct 2016: Transformation of the Day: Jasmine lost 65 pounds and has gone from a size 26 to a size 12. This Alpha Kappa Alpha soror didn’t let depression and emotional eating beat her. Check out how she lost the weight.

Over the past 6 months, starting on February 1st, 2016, I’ve lost 65 pounds through hard work, a meal plan and the help of my trainer. I was told by my therapist that I was depressed and it reflected in my eating habits. For example, I had 10 tubs of ice cream in my freezer at one point in time. That led me to make the decision that it was time for a change. Now, I run 5Ks and exercise daily!
What inspired me to keep going even when I wanted to give up is that I realized I’m not trash. Therefore, I refuse to put trash in my body, because you only get one! My eating habits were changed with a meal plan that my trainer gave me. This plan included meals that had no dairy, no salt, no sugar and limited carbs.
Initially, I worked out twice per week with my trainer doing HIIT, weight training and core workouts. Currently, I do HIIT workouts twice weekly with weight training and run daily 3-6 miles per day.
My starting weight was 303 pounds and I wore a size 26. Currently, I weigh 238 pounds and wear a size 12. I am 5’9″. My advice for others who want to lose weight is BE PATIENT. Every day, choose to change something small because progress is a process!

Britteny lost 111 pounds
} ?>Transformation of the Day: Britteny lost 111 pounds. She had a unique wake up call that put the spot light on the struggle with weight that she’d been having since childhood. Commitment, faith, fitness and healthy eating habits were key to her success. Check out her journey.
What was your motivation? What inspired you when you wanted to give up?
I got a phone call one day from a friend of a friend who was selling insurance. I wanted to help a friend so I listened to what he had to offer. He was selling long-term disability insurance, something of which, I didn’t need but I went through the evaluation to help my friend’s friend.I was driving down the highway when he called and delivered the news. He said, “Brittney, your application was denied due to a high BMI.” I’m like, “Excuse me?” I couldn’t believe they were denying me! How could someone tell me they wouldn’t allow me to PAY THEM? Were they calling me FAT? He went on to try to ease the news by relating to me saying he has this problem as well with finding approval.
I didn’t care. They weren’t calling me fat, they were shining light on the facts. I was 24 years old at 281 pounds with a BMI of 48%. I realized that I was fighting a bigger fight than getting some insurance that I didn’t need anyway. I was fighting what I had always fought since I was a kid and that was OBESITY. I knew after this experience that it was time for a change.
Simply put, I am a Christian. When I wanted to give up, I found motivation through my connection with Christ and my belief that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I also thought about all those who were rooting for me, encouraging me and counting on me. I took my goals in small steps.
How did you change your eating habits?
After that life changing experience, I searched for a personal trainer. I knew it would be an investment, but I wanted someone who would push me because I tried many different programs before. My trainer, James Allen Jr., used functional fitness and strength training mixed with a meal plan that catered to my needs to accelerate my weight loss.Changes to my eating habits included eliminating fast food, meal prepping and substituting unhealthy snack foods with healthy snack foods. I didn’t know much about nutrition at all, so I began learning from my trainer. I had to stop eating Chick-Fil-A all the time. I had to cut out potato chips and fried foods. I began drinking protein shakes, baked or grilled chicken, shrimp, egg whites and many other high protein foods.
What did your workout routines look like?
My workouts were ever changing, but mainly it was weight lifting, cardio and core exercises. I did squats, leg lifts, walked on the treadmill, did sprints, deadlifts, bench press and a lot more. I started with 3-4 one hour sessions per week. Now, I love working out and I work out every day!Starting weight/Current weight
My starting weight was 281 pounds and my current is weight 170 pounds. My height is 5’4″. No surgery. Just diet and exercise and a whole lot of prayer. How long did your transformation take?
I started my journey in January of 2015 and to be honest, I am still on a journey. I hit 170 in the middle of June 2016, I have maintained that weight since and I feel great. What advice do you have for others who want to lose weight?
JUST KEEP GOING! There were times I wanted to quit and I tell you that quitting is truly is the easiest thing to do. BUT, who wants easy? I am so thankful to God for this journey because I have a great story to tell! If you really want to change your life, then just keep going. Galatians 6:9 was my motivational scripture. Whatever it is… whether it’s an outfit you want to wear, a thing you want to do or just the life you know you want to live… be motivated and go CONQUER the fight!
Nieta lost 48 pounds
} ?>Update: Congrats go out to Nieta. This former caterer just launched her clean eating blog! Check it out. (more on how she lost 48 pounds below…)
SimplyCleanCheating.com “As a former caterer, I combined my passion for food with fitness and created Simply Clean Cheating. Clean ChEATing is about taking our food temptations or the foods we love and making them waist friendly. We focus so much on what we CAN’T eat when on a fat loss plan, we don’t focus on the array of varieties and swaps we can make to stay excited about the food we eat while on the journey. This is the place where health meets comfort.”

Transformation of the Day: Nieta lost 48 pounds. This awesome mom and wife had been on the weight loss rollercoaster for a number of years. With clean, low carb eating and a real commitment to regular exercise she has transformed her body and her mindset. Now, she is committed to helping others change their lives. Check out how she did it.
In 2006, I got a breast reduction and with those gone, that muffin top was more apparent. I went to Weight Watchers and lost 60 pounds. Then I got married and had a child. In 2013, my son was diagnosed w/ Autism Spectrum Disorder. I began living like nothing mattered other than “fixing” him. His diagnosis became my obsession and I let myself go. I ate/drank whatever I wanted. I went to work with an “As long as I show up…” attitude. All but 13 lbs. of the weight I’d lost came back.
Life is way too short and I was obsessing over my son’s condition, something I have NO control over. So, I went back to “exercising” (doing cardio) and clean eating. I lost 30 lbs. but I still wasn’t where I wanted to be. Got a new job where office food is the norm and gained 28 of those pounds back. It was time to get off of this rollercoaster. It took a while, but something clicked a year ago.
My husband proposed a low-carb diet. My first reaction was “I don’t eat a lot of carbs.” I started really analyzing what I eat. I was eating clean, but you can still have too much of a good thing. Brown rice, wheat pasta, FRUIT… my fruit intake was crazy. I lost 5 lbs. during the first week of going low carb and everything just came together.
I also began weightlifting, doing the Body Beast program, and doing loads of research on macros, carb intake and eating for your body type. I combined my love of food with fitness and started my Instagram page @simplycleancheating to share what I eat daily so people don’t think losing weight is only grilled chicken and broccoli. My motivation is me and helping others through my page.
I want to be the best I can possibly be mentally and physically. Clothes I would have never thought I would wear are now in my closet. I had to get real with my goals and expectations. Consistency is ESSENTIAL in weight loss. Even if the process doesn’t seem to working fast enough, trust it. No one becomes overweight overnight, and the same goes for losing it. So here’s my “current,” not “after” pic, because it’s for life, it doesn’t end. I’m 48 lbs. down and only getting better.
What kinds of unhealthy food did you have to cut out?
In the very beginning, juice and fried foods. After about 2 yrs of clean eating, I cleaned my diet up even more. I drastically cut my carb intake: wheat pasta, sweet potatoes fruit and brown rice. I eat primarily lean proteins, veggies, almonds, berries, and healthy fats. I only drink water. I also had a really bad sweet tooth and needed “something sweet” after every meal. I learned ways to eliminate that need, and if a situation occurred where the craving won’t go away, I eat a small piece of 70% dark chocolate.
What did your exercise routine look like?
Initially, I did mostly cardio at the gym with the treadmill and elliptical. I also used Shaun T’s T25 and Insanity programs. My current routine consists of Body Beast which is primarily weightlifting and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). This could be Plyo, stair climbing or anything that challenges me. I also do a 3 mile lunch walk daily. The changes lifting has made for my body is nothing short of amazing. I workout 5-6 days a week and can finally do full push-ups!
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
I started at 237 lbs. I am currently 189. My highest size in my entire weight loss journey was a size 20. Now, I wear size 12. (Occasionally a size 14 depending on the brand) My height is 5’2″.
How long did your transformation take so far?
I began in June 2015. I hit 189 lbs. recently (June).
What advice do you have for others who want to lose weight?
Stop lying to yourself about where you want to be and how you want to feel/look. I was in denial for YEARS. I made so many excuses, “they make these clothes too small,” or “having my son got me like this.” I also “played fit” for a while, telling people what to eat and advising them to be consistent and I wasn’t. I had to have an HONEST conversation with myself. I became CONSISTENT which, besides discipline, is the magic answer. I get up at 5a.m. every morning whether I want to or not. My goals are bigger than that extra 20 min. of sleep.
Last piece of advice: Research what you eat.

Fatmah lost 22 pounds
} ?>Our Ugandan sista Fatmah lost 10kg (22 pounds). She was so sure of her size that she didn’t try on the clothing she bought while on holiday. When she got home and and nothing fit, that was the moment of truth. She says that making small, gradual changes to her eating habits and embracing weight training have really made a difference. Check out her story.
I was at my highest weight of 87 kgs (191 pounds) when I had my wake up call. I was shopping for clothes while on holiday in the UK and I didn’t bother to try anything on because I knew that I was a size 14. Even when my hubby suggested that I try some things on before I bought them I told him,”No need. I know my size”. When I returned home to Uganda nothing fit. The pants would not go past my knees and the dresses would not go over my shoulders! I knew it was time to wake up. Also, I couldn’t wear shorts anymore because my thighs rubbed together. I had to wear biker shorts under my dresses and my clothing choices were limited. I was so disapointed in myself.
I started slowly by making small changes, like having one sugar instead of 3. I used low fat milk instead of full cream and began grilling instead of frying my food. I ate healthier carbs, mostly sweet potatoes and pumpkin. I made sure half of my plate was veggies and salads with all meals. I only ate carbs after a good workout and no carbs at dinner time, only chicken and beef ( with steak once a week). I love pastries. Before, I would eat them in addition to my other meals of the day. Now, I have more balance. If I eat donuts for breakfast, for lunch I’ll have a light salad. On days that I know I’m having a 3 course meal for dinner, i have smoothies during the day to compansate en balance my calories for the day.
For exercise, I started by walking slowly, 3 times a week. Then, after a month, I did walking/running intervals 5 times a week. 4 months down the road, I weighed 80kgs and then I hit a plateau. I got demotivated until I heard about the benefits of weight training from a freind. I decided to join a gym and started lifting weights. The scale didn’t go down much, but my body was shrinking and I was getting more toned. Now, I lift weights 3 times a week combined with 30 minutes cardio that I do before I lift. I do 2 days a week of just cardio and running. 4 months after I started using weights, I lost 3 more kgs and I now weigh 77kgs (169 pounds). I realize that muscle is heavier, but I look way smaller than when I weighed 80kgs. This journey has taken 8 months and I’m still pushing on.
My advice to anyone wanting to lose weight is start with small changes and don’t be soo hard on yourself. Ditch the scales and pay attention to how your body is changing. Take it one day at a time. Dont do diets… think of it as a new lifestyle.
Daisy lost 87 pounds
} ?>Transformation of the Day: Daisy lost 87 pounds. She has transformed her body over the last 2 years. Her story shows that you can workout out at home and get great results. This journey is not easy, but this mom knows that being healthier and loving what you see in the mirror is worth it. Check out her story.
My name is Daisy C. After birth of my last child in 2013, I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror and I wanted to change. In 2014, I embarked on a journey to create a healthier me. I’ve had the full support of husband who is by my side and always pushing me harder.
advertisementI purchased Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout for my gaming console to start the exercise portion of my journey. I wanted to feel comfortable and that meant working out in the privacy of my own home, instead going the gym. Now, I’ve also incorporated Zumba Core into my workouts. With those two great programs and by switching up my meals, I’ve seen great results. I worked out 7 days a week for 45 minutes a day doing muscle confusion exercises that target every area of the body. This has been a major factor in how the weight fell off.
I cut back on junk food and sweets. Instead, I started drinking more water than sodas and started eating what would typically be thought of as healthy foods. I start out my day with a light breakfast. For example, I might have eggs, toast and orange juice. For lunch, I’ll usually have a salad and fruit with lots of water. Dinner could be a nice meal of baked chicken and veggies. Whatever I eat in a day, I burn off those calories the next day with a strength and training exercises that cause me to sweat.
I continue to do what has been working for me. My starting weight was 242 pounds and I currently weight 155 pounds. My height is 5’7″.
I never had surgery or took diet drugs to lose the weight, because I felt that would be cheating. I had to fall in love with the process and begin loving the woman I saw in the mirror again. I eventually captured the attention of friends and family via Facebook and created a fitness page called Carr-dio Fitness, where I share my workouts. Now that I’ve reached my goal, I want to help others reach theirs.
The advice I would give to other women who want to lose weight is to keep pushing and never give up. This journey is hard, but nothing in life that is worth having comes easy.

Constance lost 70 pounds
} ?>Update Nov 2016 – Constance lost another 10 pounds and recently participated in her first figure competition. She’s lost a total of 80 pounds.
I’m writing to update you on my progress. I have lost another 10 pounds, for a total of 80 lbs. released. I also competed in my first figure competition, placing 3rd in the over 30 category. I used flexible dieting to prepare for my competition. I still wear the same size clothes at this time. I am completely satisfied with my body image, but I still have a hard time believing what I look like. My mind still sees me at 220 pounds, until I walk pass a mirror. I am currently studying for my Personal Trainer Certification, so I can help others meet their fitness goals. If I had to give any advice, it would be to continuously set goals so that you have something to work towards.
Transformation of the Day: Constance lost 70 pounds, going from a size 16 to a size 2. This petite mom was always “thick” and didn’t realize how much weight she’d gained over the years. Wanting to avoid a family history of diabetes and high blood pressure, she did the work and made simple, realistic changes. Check out her story.
Hello, my name is Constance and I’m writing this in hopes that I can inspire someone else on their weight loss journey. I have always been considered “thick,” but as I got older and had children my weight continued to increase. At my heaviest, I had 220 pounds on my 5 foot tall frame. I never really realized just how heavy I was until I started losing weight.
My family has a long history of diabetes and high blood pressure, and I knew I did not want to take medication for the rest of my life. I started working out twice a day in August of 2014, but I never lost a pound until December 2014. That’s when I realized I couldn’t out work horrible eating habits. Once I removed sugars and simple carbs from my diet, I lost two pounds a day for two weeks. I fell in love with heavy lifting and spinning class and do both on a consistent basis. I work out 5-6 days per week and run 5ks twice per month. I enjoy working out and watching my body change.
I am currently training for my first body building competition. At this time, I have lost a total of 70 pounds by simply changing my diet and exercising on a regular basis. My current weight is 150 pounds. I have gone from a size 16 to a size 2 in about a year and a half.
The best advice I could give to others is to make small, realistic changes. There is nothing special about me, so I know anyone can do this. I surround myself with positive like-minded people that keep me motivated and focused.
Positive Connection: I just wanted to let you know that you sight truly does work. I saw you feature on Fitnatic Lifestyle (Gayna) and reached out to her when I was struggling. She responded to me in a positive way and gave me the motivation I needed to keep going. For that, I will forever be eternally grateful for your site and for her. THANK YOU!

Valerie lost 102 pounds
} ?>Update January 2018: Valerie lost more than 100 pounds and has worked to keep the pounds off. She experiened a significant loss when she gave birth during the 5th month of pregnancy and her baby passed away. Grief and depression have not stopped her. She is taking life one step at a time.
Wanted to send in an update to my story since so much has changed in the last few years since I first started reading your website! My story started when I turned 30 years old in 2012. I weighed 280 lbs and was depressed. I started working out, and 3 years later I was down to 175 pounds. I continued working on myself and was hoping to compete in a bodybuilding competition.
In 2016, we decided to add to the family and I got pregnant. At 5 months, I delivered and my daughter died at birth. I was crushed and depressed again. My weight reached 250 pounds.
After I was cleared to work out again, I started weight lifting because I know it produces really great results for me. I work two body parts a day, 5-6 times a week. I also do interval cardio (HIIT) for 15 minutes, 3 times a week. As far as eating habits, I don’t follow any particular diet. However, my eating style is high protein, lower carb and moderate fat. I monitor my macros and calories daily.
Fast forward to today… I’m down to 200 pounds and still working to get back to 175 pounds. I’m talking to someone about grief and just trying to do my best to take care of myself. It was a struggle to experience the weight gain with no baby to bring home. It’s like I gained weight for no reason, but with a great support system I’m doing better and just taking it one day at a time.
Updated pictures: In the pink dress, I weighed 280 pounds. The photo is from when I turned 30 years old. The second pic is from when I turned 35 years old. The other before and after photos (with the dates) show how I’ve been doing since I had the baby.

Transformation of the Day: Valerie lost 102 pounds. After she saw the photos from her 30th birthday celebration, she knew that she wanted to change her life. For the last 3 years, she’s been changing her relationship with food and working out hard. Read her awesome story.
I started my journey after seeing a picture of myself at my 30th birthday party in Miami. I weighed 280 pounds and I couldn’t believe it. I needed a change, immediately!
I changed my eating habits by monitoring my portion sizes, cutting out fast food and cutting out fried food. I started to log all my meals in My Fitness Pal to keep track of what I was eating.
When I first started, my workouts were mostly cardio and a little weight lifting. Then, after I gained some of the weight back, I got a trainer and started lifting more weights and cut down on the cardio. Now, I do strength training 5-6 days a week and the sessions are usually about 90 minutes to 2 hours. I finish my workouts with 20 minutes of sprints, 2-3 times a week.
I am 5’4″ tall and my highest weight was 280 pounds. Today, my current weight is 178 pounds. I have been working on this process since January 2013. I haven’t had any surgeries and I don’t use wraps or any other products to help with skin tightening or weight loss. I do use supplements like Whey protein and BCAA’s.
My advice for others would be to start lifting weights and don’t just rely just on cardio. Weight lifting won’t make you “huge” or “bulky”, and it can really increase your results in terms of fat loss. My goal is to compete in a bodybuilding competition by the end of this year. Also, I recently became a trainer in my gym.

On September 27, 2014, I weighed 215 pounds. I decided to change my life and get fit. I started off by just walking and watching what I ate. No greasy food and I limited my intake on carbs. Then, I turned to social media to help keep me motivated and to learn more about working out. Through the ups and downs, I remained focused for the most part during my fitness journey. I have joined a gym and I workout 5 times a week. I do cycling, strength training, cross fit and a lot of body circuit work.
On my 30th birthday, I bought the outfit on the right to go to Puerto Rico. Needless to say it wouldn’t even go pass my lower thighs (wish I would of thought to take pics). I tried that baby on today, 1 1/2 years later, and IT FITS! I currently weigh 169 pounds at 5’7″ tall.
My advice for others: Never give up on your goals. It will take time, but the time will be worth it at the end!

Dani lost 30 pounds
} ?>Update 2017: Dani is still going strong her her journey. Size 18/20 to size 14.
I wanted to give an update to my sisters on our healthy journey. My motivation for slimming down started in January 2013. Initially was wanting to feel healthier, especially when I finished my PhD in May 2013. Within the past year, my motivation has shifted to wanting to have more energy since I became more involved with community organizing and activism. In order to fight social injustice, I knew that feeling my best was was critically important. I also went natural in April of 2015, so I think the process of growing out my natural, healthy hair inspired me to help my body become even healthier as well. My eating habits have changed.
February 2017 marked a full year of me being a pescatarian, eating only fish and seafood. During the week (Monday – Friday), I usually drink coffee with fruit for breakfast and have veggies for lunch. Sometimes I have a light snack, and then for dinner I usually have something with a soy burger or fish. The past year has taught me the importance of healthy eating, and I’ve been taking that really seriously. I try to workout at least 4 or 5 times per week, alternating upper and lower body strength training and doing at least 30 minutes of cardio every time I workout.
In January 2013 (photo on the left), I wore a size 18/20. In February 2017 (on the right), I am a size 14 (height: 5’2″). I started my journey in January 2013, and it has been a process of victories and setbacks, but now I really feel like I’ve found the equilibrium on my journey to becoming my healthiest self. My advice for others is to be gentle with yourself and continue on the journey, even if some moments are more difficult than others. You’ll get there, and we’ll be cheering you on along the way. I would love to be in touch. I’m on Instagram: @daniellisha, and I’m on Twitter: @dani_creolegirl. Love to you all!
Lifestyle Change: Dani lost 30 pounds. A few months after finishing her PhD in Higher Education, she committed to starting her weight release journey. With healthy food choices, exercise and lots of self love, she has committed to her new healthy lifestyle for good. Check out what she shared with us.
Hi, Black Women Losing Weight! I want to share my weight loss journey, with hopes that it might inspire my fellow sisters who are losing weight. The photo on the left was taken in December 2012, and the photo on the right was taken on March 5, 2016. I started my weight loss journey in October 2013.
I started doing a lot of strength training along with cardio, and found my body becoming a lot leaner and stronger. I recently also became a pescetarian (a vegetarian that eats fish and seafood), so I’m looking forward to integrating this eating style into my overall wellness plan.
Motivation: My motivation for losing weight was wanting to feel stronger and to feel more comfortable in my own skin. After having finished my PhD in Higher Education in May of 2013, I decided that I wanted to make exercising a lifestyle, not just something to do in spurts. When I began exercising regularly, I discovered my love of strength-training. Using weights helped me to discover how powerful and strong my body was, which was so liberating in so many ways. When I wanted to give up, I just remembered that I was on a journey, and even if I got frustrated, I could always start right back up.
Eating Habits: About a month ago, I decided to become a pescatarian, which means that I gave up eating all poultry, beef, and pork altogether, and I only eat fish and seafood. Since I stopped eating all animal products except for fish and seafood, my body feels so much better, and I feel like my body is digesting food so much more efficiently.
Workouts: During most weeks, I try to work out at least 4 times per week. I do some form of strength training and cardio every single day. I try to get at least 30 minutes of strength training and at least 20 minutes of cardio in during every workout.
Progress: I lost approximately 30 pounds over the course of my journey, and I hope to keep progressively burning more fat and losing more weight, slowly. I am 5’ 2” tall.
Advice: My advice to others who want to lose weight is to love yourself from the moment you start your fitness/weight loss journey, and never let that love go. Very often, people think to themselves, “I’ll really love myself after I lose weight.” However, we can’t punish ourselves that way, and deny ourselves the self-love that we all deserve. Just think of it as a lifelong commitment to healthy eating, exercise, and loving ourselves from the inside, out.
